New Delhi: Narendra Modi’s dream project is ‘One Nation, One Election’! However, the Prime Minister himself is not present on the day the bill related to it is presented in the Lok Sabha.
The RSS’s dream is ‘One Nation, One Election’! But even after the whip was issued, 20 BJP MPs are absent from Parliament.
Is ‘One Nation, One Election’ a way to consolidate the BJP’s monopoly? However, the grand alliance ‘India’ showed its strength on the day the bill was presented.
Modi’s BJP rushed to the polls on Tuesday to present the ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill. To implement this step, an amendment to the constitution is required. And if it does not get a two-thirds majority in both the houses, that initiative will die in the field. The amendment is far away, the Modi government had to stumble while presenting the bill. ‘Dordanda Pratap’ Amit Shah had to say in a soft tone, ‘There is nothing controversial in presenting this constitutional amendment bill. The Prime Minister said that it needs to be sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee.’ That is, the Centre went on the back foot from the beginning. It took 1 hour and 44 minutes to introduce the bill. And then the bill went to the JPC. Courtesy? The outcry of the opposition ‘India’. The first division of the vote was requested by Trinamool’s Kalyan Banerjee. Initially, 220 votes were cast in favor of introducing the bill through electronic technology. 149 against. Many could not vote properly. Later, they voted on paper slips. The final result – 263 in favor of introducing the bill. 198 against. In other words, the ruling NDA could not even cross the 272 mark due to the strength of the opposition. In this equation, the Modi government understood that this constitutional amendment bill will not be passed by showing its majority. Narendra Modi is not there in that situation. The question is, how serious are the BJP MPs about this? Modi is absent, Nitin Gadkari is also absent. And four BJP MPs from Bengal. Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal or Trinamool’s Mala Roy, Deepak Adhikari (Dev), Shatraghan Sinha, Shatabdi Roy were not on the opposition bench, but this bill is not their dream project! The pressure is on the center. Questions are being raised in the court of Delhi, will this bill be passed at all?
To get the Constitution Amendment Bill passed in the Lok Sabha, two-thirds of the MPs present on that day will have to vote in favor. Then the Rajya Sabha. 461 MPs were present in the Lok Sabha when the bill was introduced. If the bill had to be passed on the same day for the sake of argument, the government needed at least 307 votes. The BJP camp could not even come close to that. The bill was introduced by Union Law Minister Arjunram Meghwal. 129th Constitution Amendment Bill. Along with ‘The Union Territories Law Amendment Bill 2024’. Trinamool, Congress, DMK, Uddhav’s pro-Shiv Sena, Sharad Pawar’s NCP, CPM, etc. raised strong objections at the time of the bill’s introduction. The reason for the opposition is that the foundation of the Constitution will be destroyed. The federal structure will be damaged. Excessive powers will be given to the Election Commission. The whole thing is a conspiracy to break the back of regional parties. Outside the meeting, Trinamool’s Lok Sabha leader Sudeep Banerjee said, “If this bill is passed without strengthening the anti-defection law, it will be a terrible danger to democracy. If the ruling party wants, it will break any party and topple the state government. Therefore, Trinamool will not allow this conspiracy of Modi to succeed at all.”
Joint Parliamentary Committee. Lok Sabha. Rajya Sabha. Then the President’s signature. But Delhi is gradually moving away from
Modi. If it is passed in the next one or two years, this amendment is unlikely to come into effect before 2034. Will it remain in power until then?
